Buttock Augmentations Continue to Increase

The last few years have seen an increase in buttock enhancements thanks to the admiration of celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Nicki Minaj. The statistics for 2015 should be available soon and plastic surgeons expect the numbers to keep soaring.

More Twenty-Somethings Choosing Plastic Surgery

Many people assume that plastic surgery procedures are limited to an older demographic, but the reality is that many people in their 20’s are realizing the benefits of undergoing plastic surgery procedures now to combat the signs of aging early.

Since 2013, the popularity of plastic surgery procedures for people in their 20’s has doubled. Millenials are now the fastest growing age group seeking plastic surgery. These patients are focused on less invasive procedures to keep them looking younger for longer.

The top five procedures for this younger age group are:

  1. BOTOX® to smooth away wrinkles
  2. Skin peels to remove sun damage and freckles
  3. Dermal fillers for plumper lips and softening of acne scars
  4. Non-surgical fat reduction for non-invasive body contouring
  5. Laser hair removal for a smoother appearance

Plastic surgery may have been taboo for their parents and grandparents’ generations, but for the up-and-coming generations, plastic surgery is something to talk about. Patients are sharing experiences and aren’t afraid to tell each other exactly how they achieve and maintain their great looks.

Are you interested in how you can enhance your appearance with plastic surgery. We are happy to discuss your options with you. Call Allure Plastic Surgery today at (212) 661-2563 to arrange your consultation with an experienced New York plastic surgeon.

FDA Proposal to Restrict Tanning Bed Usage

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, even one session in a tanning bed can increase your risk of skin cancer: squamous cell carcinoma by 67 percent and basal cell carcinoma by 29 percent. In a step to protect public health and reduce the incidence of skin cancer, the FDA last month proposed two rules.

The first would restrict the use of indoor tanning sunlamps to individuals over the age of 18 and require adults over the age of 18 to sign a risk acknowledgment before their first tanning session and every six months thereafter.

The second proposed rule would require sunlamp manufacturers and tanning facilities to take proactive steps to improve the safety of use of these products, such as prohibiting modifying the devices with stronger bulbs without recertification with the FDA and limiting the amount of light allowed through protective eyewear.

The idea is to force individuals to wait until adulthood in the hopes that they will fully understand the risks associated with indoor tanning and make the beds themselves safer for those who still opt for it.

At Allure Plastic Surgery, we can help you enhance your skin’s appearance with FDA-approved devices that are safe and effective. You can rejuvenation your skin’s appearance by removing sunspots or skin resurfacing with Fraxel Laser. Skin Care Recovery Plan After the Holidays

The holidays are usually filled with a lot of good food and drink combined with late nights out with friends and family and very little time for yourself. Now that the calendar has turned over to 2016, it’s time to rejuvenate your skin after the neglectful holiday season.

  • For dull skin and dark circles brought on by late nights, try exfoliating the dull outer layer of dead skin cells and use eye creams containing retinoids to lighten the dark circles.
  • For dehydration from too many cocktails and not enough water, use a hyaluronic-heavy moisturizer to lock moisture into your skin.
  • For an over-indulgence in sugary treats that leaves your skin looking sallow, use a moisturizer with anti-glycation properties to boost circulation function and keep your skin looking fresh.

To achieve a truly glowing complexion, visit us at Allure Plastic Surgery for a chemical peel or try a photofacial to turn back the clock on all those years of sun exposure.

Are you ready to rejuvenate your skin after the holidays? Start 2016 off right. Call Allure Plastic Surgery today at (212) 661-2563 to arrange your consultation with an experienced New York plastic surgeon. We welcome patients throughout New York City, Manhattan, and Long Island.

Does BMI Play a Role in Liposuction Safety?

new study conducted by researchers at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, the University of Illinois’ Division of Plastic Surgery, and the Lehigh Valley (Pa.) Health Network set out to determine the risk of varying liposuction volume with different patient levels of body mass index (BMI).

What the researchers found is that higher BMI can lead to safer higher volume liposuction procedures for patients. According to one of the study’s co-authors John Y. S. Kim, M.D., of the Feinberg School of Medicine, “BMI plays a role in outcomes of liposuction volumes, and higher-BMI patients may be able to tolerate more liposuction than lower-BMI patients.”

He also said that one of the most important findings of the study was that “liposuction in the hands of properly trained surgeons is an exceedingly safe procedure with low morbidity.”

The study emphasizes the importance of choosing highly qualified and experienced surgeons to perform liposuction.

At Allure Plastic Surgery in New York, our plastic surgeons have years of experience in offering our patients safe and effective procedures.

Celebrity Beauty Ideals and Plastic Surgery Trends: 30 Years of Influence

It is no secret that celebrity trends influence our everyday idea of beauty. With social media, TV, and advertising, we are bombarded with images of celebrities and the lavish and enviable way they live their lives. It is only natural to want to mimic the beautiful faces and forms we see reflected in our entertainment.

The trends we see in the movies and beauty magazines get reflected in the popularity of the plastic surgery procedures of the time. Over the last 30 years, we have seen beauty ideals and the plastic surgery trends that support them change as differing body types come in to and out of vogue.

1980s – Voluptuous Athleticism

1980s Voluptuous Athleticism

Big hair, a big bosom, and legs that stretched on for miles were the mark of a trendsetter in the 1980s. The 80s saw the rise of the supermodel. These Amazonian types were tall, leggy women representing the American ideal of feminine allure.

Some of the most popular models and actresses of the time exemplified this new body type:

  • Elle MacPherson
  • Naomi Campbell
  • Linda Evangelista
  • Kathleen Turner

The 1980s were also a time for fitness. Jogging and aerobics were the lead of a new fitness craze. Women’s bodies were celebrated for being tall, athletic, slim, and still buxom rather than the waif-like, slim figures of the 60s and 70s.

Plastic surgery also began to gain popularity as surgeons and advocates expanded public awareness. More information was available to consumers, who could now make fully informed decisions about using plastic surgery to help them achieve their beauty goals.

Celebrities like Cher and Dolly Parton demonstrated that there was no shame in altering your appearance to look your best. Even Tori Spelling, at the age of sixteen, had her nose reshaped. The most popular plastic surgery procedures of the 1980s included:

1990s – Thin Waifs

1990s Thin Waif

Just as crimped hair and lip liner five shades darker than your lipstick have faded with the fads of the 90s, so has the “heroin chic” look that typified the starlets of the day.

Models and Hollywood stars’ bodies were too thin to be athletic like their predecessors from the 80s. Small waistlines coupled with petite androgynous body types ruled the day with stars like:

  • Kate Moss
  • Winona Ryder
  • Calista Flockhart

Plastic surgery continued to grow in the 90s however. During the 90s, plastic surgeons performed nearly 1 million cosmetic procedures, cementing plastic surgery’s place in shaping the bodies of our pop culture icons. The most popular plastic surgery procedures of the era included:

Although the FDA restricted the use of silicone implants, millions of women still opted to enhance their figure with saline implants. Stars like Melanie Griffith and Pamela Anderson proved that a full figure was still sexy despite the dominant waif-like look of the era, which helped propel a more healthy ideal for women’s bodies in the next decade.

2000s – Fit and Shapely

2000s Fit and Shapely

The turn of the century saw the end of “heroin chic” and the return of fit, firm, and tan. Visible abs and strong arms were in and airbrushed tans helped show off healthy looking body contours without subjecting women to dangerous UV rays for tanning.

Hollywood actresses started hiring personal trainers to achieve the flat stomachs and rounded bottoms that met the current beauty standard set by women like:

  • Giselle Bundchen
  • Megan Fox
  • Angelina Jolie

To achieve these new standards, women increasingly turned to plastic surgery procedures to perfect their flaws. Some of the most requested plastic surgery procedures of the 2000s were:

The FDA approved the use of silicone breast implants again in 2006. Many celebrities took the opportunity to enhance their figures with breast augmentation and other procedures. Heidi Montag opted to undergo 10 procedures in one day to achieve the look she wanted. Patricia Heaton underwent several procedures to correct sagging breasts and a stretched tummy, procedures now commonly grouped into a mommy makeover, to reclaim the more youthful look of her body after having four C-sections to give birth to her children.

Today – Curvaceous and Youthful

Today Curvaceous and Youthful

The trend halfway through this second decade of the century is focused on curves. Artists like Nicki Minaj and J. Lo have released tribute songs (“Anaconda” and “Booty”) to the large round female buttocks that their bodies helped to popularize.

In addition to lifting and refining curves, the aging population of Hollywood is also turning to non-invasive procedures like Botox and dermal fillers to reverse the signs of aging and keep them looking as fresh and youthful as the hottest young stars of today, such as:

  • Kim Kardashian
  • Beyonce Knowles
  • Scarlett Johansson

The most popular plastic surgery procedures of today reflect the changing beauty ideals of our times:

For today’s woman, plastic surgery is all about finding the look that you feel comfortable with. Ariel Winter just underwent a breast reduction, which would have been unthinkable to someone like Pamela Anderson in the 80s and early 90s. But other stars, like Iggy Azalea, are still opting for breast implants to fill out their figures. Over 1 million Botox injections are administered each year in the United States. What everyone can agree on is that looking and feeling your best is the ideal of today.

At Allure Plastic Surgery, we believe you should feel comfortable and confident with your body. Plastic surgery can help you achieve that. We offer a wide variety of surgical and non-surgical options to meet the needs of our patients. Whether you are seeking facial rejuvenation or body contouring, we can help you select the procedure that best suits your needs.

Wrinkle Risk by State: What Is Your Risk in New York?

In its second annual ranking of wrinkle risk by state, RoC Skincare ranked New York as the most wrinkle-prone state in the nation.

The rankings were based on several factors, some of which may surprise you, such as:

  • Daily stress levels
  • Average commute times
  • Exposure to UV rays, determined by latitude, elevation, and cloud cover
  • Demographics, including racial and ethnic populations
  • Extreme high and low temperatures
  • Incidence of smoking
Your New York Wrinkle Risk

New York earned its number one ranking for wrinkle risk because of the high stress of its residents, including dissatisfaction with life and lack of emotional support, and the second longest commute times in the nation.

Other ranks were surprising. States with the most sunshine, such as Hawaii, Florida, and California came in at #47, #32, and #36 respectively.

Unhealthy eating and smoking also served as a big factor in wrinkle risk. Three of the states in the top ten earned their ranks for those unhealthy habits: #3 West Virginia, #7 Kentucky, #8 Tennessee.

Living in New York with a high risk for wrinkles, proper skin care and facial rejuvenation procedures can help you keep your skin looking young and fresh for years to come.

Call Allure Plastic Surgery today at (212) 661-2563 to arrange your facial rejuvenation consultation with an experienced New York plastic surgeon.
