Before & After

Hair Transplant Techniques

While there are many different ways to transplant hair as part of a hair transplant procedure, they all share the same core principles in common - relocating healthy hair follicles from areas of full, lashish hair to bald or balding areas.

As soon as the transferred hair follicles begin to recover, they will start growing like other normal hair to correct the hair loss you've experienced.  Typically, the hair transplant surgeon will remove donor hair from the back of your head under local anesthesia or mild sedation and the method of hair removal will vary depending on the technician performing your surgery.

Most surgeons will either use a strip removal or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) process for getting donor's hair.  We typically use the more popular FUE technique, which acquires the natural grouping of hair as individual strokes, eliminating the possibility of a linear scar.

When the graft is finally prepared, the surgeon cleans and numbs the area on your scalp where the hair follicles are supposed to be inserted and then uses a scalpel or needle to create slits on the scalp and delicately place each graft in those slits.

The time taken for the entire process to complete depends entirely on the size of the transplant. It's a completely safe and natural process, especially when compared to the many other options available.

Is Hair Transplant Right For You?

While transplanted hair is permanent and will never fall out, your natural hair may continue to grow and fall out, making the key to determining whether or not someone is a good candidate for hair transplant surgery the estimation of their hair loss pattern.

To help them with this estimation, our surgeon may use a densitometer to both help determine the permanency of your donor hair as well as the extent of current hair loss.  Since it's difficult to predict the amount or rate of hair loss in any patient, most young patients may end up with an unnatural-looking hairline and appearance as their hair loss continues.

In this case, it's advisable to start with a small hair transplant to provide a little more density in the hairline with the understanding you'll likely need additional procedures in the future as things change.

No matter what your age, the most successful hair transplant surgeries are the ones that provide a stable supply of donor hair to cover the current bald or balding area, as well as any future hair loss.

When the procedure has been completed, you can expect a fuller head of hair in a few months and since it's a permanent procedure, you won't have to worry about a receding hairline or bald spots any longer.

Though hair growth after a transplant may not be as good as a natural one, it as close as you can get.  With the new improvements made, you can full more confident with your fuller head of hair, especially if you've lost your hair at an early age.

Regardless of your age, there's no need to feel older than you are simply because you've lost your hair sooner than you'd like. Thanks to the technological advancements made over the past few years, along with the specially formulated shampoos and chemicals you'll apply to maintain your newly found dense hair, you'll be happy with this one-time process that can last a lifetime.

While some patients consider hair transplants expensive and are tempted by other less expensive methods of hair regrowth, you need to bear in mind the long-term benefits of hair transplantation which can make it the most cost-effective solution for hair loss.

FUE Follicular Unit Extraction

Traditionally, the strip technique has been used for hair transplant and restoration. The process involves harvesting a strip of hair, skin and tissue from the back of the head. The is then sutured closed and could potentially leave unsightly scarring. F.U.E. Hair Transplants are at the forefront of hair restoration innovation. We are now able to transfer viable hair follicles without leaving any unsightly scarring. The procedure is tailored to your individual needs and budget.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is the process of individually extracting the hair follicle from the back of the head and transplanting it to the areas of lost hair volume. The process is similar to other medical treatments that have been utilized for decades but have now been innovated for hair transplant procedures. Men and women will no longer need to have any uncomfortable stitches with their hair transplant procedures, and recovery consists of slight scabbing that usually resolves in just a few days. The Hair Transplant Process

There are a lot of things to be considered before having a hair transplant.  First, the surgeon has to check for several things such as the quality, density, and color of your donor hair.  Then, they have to prepare the hairline by analyzing the structure of your face, a process that's very important for the final result.

After your initial consultation, the surgeon will schedule an appointment with you to have you come into the office for your procedure.  Before you arrive for your appointment, you should shampoo your hair with a surgical scrub and naturally dry it to prepare for your surgery.

To begin the procedure, you'll be administered local anesthesia and can either take a nap or watch some TV while the surgeon carefully removes and replaces your hair follicles.  While the surgery is quite easy to perform, it can also be done badly when you're not dealing with a professional and experienced plastic surgeon.

The hair tissues that are harvested from the donor area contain hair follicles that will be used to make hair restoration possible.  The hair strips harvested are divided into their follicle grouping and will undergo some tests and procedures before the graft is declared ready for transplant.

The surgeon will make several incisions in the recipient area, one for each unit of follicles with special attention given to the location, depth, and angle of each unit. This is the most critical part of the procedure because it will determine whether the result achieved looks natural or not and may take four to six hours to complete, hence the suggestion to take a nap.

Typically, hair is transplanted into three areas:

  • The head
  • The eyebrows
  • The eyelashes

Although hair transplantation is the least invasive cosmetic surgery as compared to many other methods of hair regrowth, the recovery process should be taken seriously.  Recovery is typically quick with a slight crusting over the donor and graft areas. The eyebrows and eyelashes will have to be trimmed every few weeks to produce the best results.

In almost all patients, the recovery process goes smoothly without any complications whatsoever, but since your scalp may be very tender after the surgery, you'll be advised to wear bandages on your head for a day or two afterward and your surgeon may also prescribe to you an antibiotic or anti-inflammatory drug for few days to reduce the possibility of an infection.

It's normal for the transplanted hair to fall out about two to three weeks after your surgery and when it does fall out, you'll notice new hair growth within a few months from transferred follicles that grow nicely and naturally.  Since this is to be expected, the number of grafts transplanted into your scalp will be calculated to take this into consideration.

While not normally experienced by hair transplant patients, the common side effects from a hair transplant procedure are usually minor and will go away in a few weeks. They may include:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising around the eyes
  • Swelling of the scalp
  • Lack of sensation or numbness in the treated areas
  • A crust that forms on the areas where hair was implanted or removed
  • Itchiness
  • Inflammation of the follicles
  • Unnaturally-looking hair tufts

If needed, your surgeon may also prescribe some hair-growing drugs, such as Rogaine, to enhance hair growth following transplantation.

Hair Restoration Options - Blood Infusions

Can you achieve hair re-growth without any chemicals, drugs, or surgery?

The answer is yes, using your own blood sample. The problem can now be treated using platelet blood infusions. A blood infusion can be used to reverse thinning hair and hair loss in men and women. Until now, hair loss has been treated with an application of topical medications, or surgery to transplant hair follicles.

The treatment contains the energy and growth factors that can stimulate a dormant hair follicle. Three treatments separated by 2 weeks is recommended. New hair growth is usually visualized within three months. The process is practically painless and takes approximately 15 minutes. The results can make the hair thick and revitalized.

With hair transplantation, it is advisable to keep expectations realistic, but the result of a natural hairline is a goal that is easy to attain and really worth going through in the long run.
