Facial Fat Transfer in Staten Island

Aging has its effects on everyone’s skin and the face is often the first part to present significant changes.  Lost facial volume and deep wrinkling are two of the telltale signs of aging.

Fat injection, also known as facial fat transfer, is a great option to rejuvenate the face without plastic surgery.  In this procedure, the patient’s own fat is extracted from different body parts where it is not wanted, and used to plump up the emaciated face areas.  Since this procedure uses the patient’s own fat, it eliminates the possibility of an allergic reaction and provides smooth, natural-looking results.

Is Facial Fat Transfer Right for Me?

At Allure Plastic Surgery in New York, we offer our patients the revolutionary option to restore youthful volume to their faces, naturally, with their own fat harvested from areas on their body where it isn’t wanted.

We can perform facial fat injections to:

  • Reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles
  • Soften nasolabial folds
  • Smooth over labiomandibular folds
  • Restore volume to the cheeks or lips
  • Fill in hollows under the eyes

Facial fat transfer in Staten Island is also effective for patients who have experienced lipoatrophy, the loss of fat tissue in the face due to subcutaneous injection of insulin during the treatment of diabetes.  Fat injections fill the sunken areas and restore face contour.  Both children and adults with any of these conditions are good candidates for fat injections.

Preparing for Facial Fat Injection

When speaking to your doctor during your consultation, you should accurately disclose your medical history, including current habits such as smoking, the use of supplements, blood thinners or birth control pills to the cosmetic surgeon so they can determine if you are fit to undergo a fat transfer.

After you've been approved to have the procedure, the following suggestions will not only help you prepare for fat injection, but also improve the results of fat injection.

  • Stop smoking at least four weeks prior to the surgery. This includes any products containing nicotine.
  • Stop using anything containing aspirin, blood thinner drugs, herbal supplements, and
  • Vitamin E products two weeks prior to the surgery.
  • Avoid sunbathing two weeks prior to the fat injection procedure.
  • Inform the surgeon if you develop an infection, cold, or any other illness within a week of the fat transfer procedure.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Eat healthy vegetables and fresh fruits, and avoid salty, processed food.

The Facial Fat Injection Procedure

As mentioned earlier, a fat injection procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia, with the type and amount of anesthesia depending on the amount of fat being extracted. In some cases, the doctor will offer an oral sedative to apprehensive patients, but normally it's not required with this type of procedure.

Basically, the procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, which takes place in three steps:

Fat Removal

The first step in rejuvenating your appearance with fat injections is harvesting the fat for the procedure. Here, the surgeon removes excess fat from the donor site, which can be the thighs, saddle bags, hips, buttocks, abdomen, or jowls.

Using thin cannulas specifically designed for liposuction, we remove fat from your outer hips, love handles, or abdomen, providing a sleeker contour to that area while obtaining enough fat for your facial injections.

To collect as many healthy fat cells as possible, extremely low suction liposuction is used to limit the damage of fat cells.

Isolation of Fat Cells

Once the fat is harvested, it is processed to remove impurities and prepare it for injection.

During this process, the fat obtained is spun in a centrifuge at a high speed to remove any liquid. The damaged fat cells are also removed at this stage.

The cleansed, undamaged fat cells are filtered and passed to the next stage.

Re-Injection of Fat

Finally, the healthy fat cells are injected into the targeted sites on the face, buttocks, or other body parts. The surgeon uses a separate hypodermic syringe to inject the fat cells deeply into the site until the desired results are achieved.

After your procedure, the remainder of your harvested fat can be kept in a frozen state for future use if you want to return throughout the year for additional injections to ensure long-lasting results.

Your Facial Fat Injection Results

Fat injections only take about one hour, and your recovery time should only be one to two days. You can expect minimal bruising or swelling at both the donor and recipient site, which typically fades in a few days, if you experience any at all. Any discomfort felt can be treated with pain medications and subsequent injections last about five minutes, with practically no recovery time needed.

Similar to all medical procedures, there are certain post-operative instructions that you should follow to enhance recovery. They include:

  • Wearing surgical tape on the facial areas for at least five days
  • Sleeping on your back with the head elevated for one week after fat injection
  • Not scrubbing your face for the first two weeks, only soft washing
  • Avoiding strenuous activities for at least one week after the treatment.
  • A follow up visit on day five, month one, and month four.

More Info about Facial Fat Transfer

Being a cosmetic operation, fat injection is not covered by health insurance unless it is an essential medical procedure. There is no set cost to the procedure, as it depends on many factors such as the amount of fat transfer required, the areas being injected, type of anesthesia used as well as the physician’s fee schedule which depends on his experience and skill level.

A major benefit of fat injection is that the results last longer that results obtained from dermal fillers. Though individual results vary from one patient to another, a properly performed procedure will last for years if not permanent.

You can expect to see results almost immediately following your procedure, and with a skilled surgeon using the latest techniques, your results can be permanent.
