How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

The lasers we use for laser hair removal target the melanin in the follicle and bulb of the hair, destroying it and leaving the skin unaffected. Because all hairs are at a different stage in their life cycle, multiple treatments are required to make sure all hairs are targeted and destroyed by the laser.

A series of five treatments spread four weeks apart is ideal for treating the face, while three or four sessions spread six weeks apart is needed for the body. Occasional touch-ups may be required to treat any hairs that grow as a result of hormones.

I love the results of my hair removal. I can’t tell you how good it feels to not have to shave my arms anymore. I highly recommend Dr. Miller and the staff at Allure Plastic Surgery.

Does Laser Hair Removal Work for All Skin Types?

Because lasers target melanin, skin type is an important factor in laser assisted hair removal. Light skin and dark hair is ideal because we can use the highest setting without risking damage to the skin. Highly pigmented dark skin is riskier to treat, but we do have alternate machines that are safer for that skin tone. There are technological advances in treatment of light hair, but since it has very little melanin to target, nothing has been proven to provide consistent results. for treatment, the hair must be clipped or shaved. Because waxing removes the entire hair shaft, there is nothing for the laser to treat and the growth will remain unaffected.

Our Laser Hair Removal Technology

The Palomar Medilux is safe for all skin tones and even has a hand piece for darker skin. This machine also treats a larger area than most, which reduces the overall time of the procedure.

The Medlite is an Nd: YAG laser that is the safest laser for patients with very dark skin. If you are prone to pigment abnormalities or have darker skin, this laser will deliver a nice result and has a low risk for complications.

Laser Hair Removal FAQ

How does laser hair removal work?

The lasers we use for hair removal target the hair’s dark pigment, which absorbs the laser’s energy; destroying the hair follicle.

Are the results permanent?

Laser hair removal treatment is Food and Drug Administration approved to produce permanent hair reduction. An average of 80 percent of patients notes an 80 percent reduction in hair. Some people see better results and others do not fare as well. The results cannot be guaranteed, however, most patients are very satisfied, which is the reason we perform the procedure on a regular basis. It’s important to seek a consultation with an experienced surgeon as the results are influenced by hair and skin type.

Who is the ideal candidate?

An ideal candidate is a person who has fair skin and dark hair. This is because the laser can be used at its strongest setting and only the darker hair will absorb the energy. Darker or tanned skin requires us to lower the strength because the dark pigment of the skin also wants to absorb the energy, which could result in damage. We do have lasers specially designed for darker skin, which also yield excellent results.

What are the side effects?

Side effects are very rare. Occasionally, non-permanent darkening of the skin can occur (hyperpigmentation); this is most common in darker skinned patients. We can avoid this by using innovative systems for darker skin that we have available at Allure Plastic Surgery. Hyperpigmentation has occurred in less than 0.1 percent of the patients treated at our office and has never been permanent. Even rarer is lightening of skin (hypopigmentation). In general, laser hair removal is very safe when performed by an experienced plastic surgeon in New York on the correct setting.
